# Period Reconciliation Readiness

## What It Is

Close readiness is the reconciliation assessment a controller reads before completing a business unit’s accounting period. It gathers unfinished deposit explanations, missing settlement money, approvals, accounting requests and integrity concerns into a current answer. The answer is useful during the month as well as at its end, because staff can inspect what still needs work without starting a close.

Each finding identifies the principal financial record and any related records involved in the same concern. An overdue item and its investigation are parts of one problem rather than separate counts. That organization helps a controller go from the assessment to the work that can actually change its result.

Readiness also explains processor clearing. It compares posted clearing money with the outstanding items still in transit, overdue or held by drafts. Payment positions and accepted exceptions add context for reviewing the period. The exception list uses period anchors, so an acceptance decision’s date alone does not determine which month’s assessment contains it.

## What It Is Not

The assessment does not perform month-end close, post money or lock a period by itself. Month-End Close owns that decision and calls the assessment within its protected transaction. The daily overview serves a different purpose: it summarizes ongoing reconciliation activity rather than evaluating a selected period. A readiness finding also differs from the saved exception staff investigate.

## How It Is Used

Controllers choose a unit, period and evaluation day, then follow blockers to their underlying work. Preparers complete remaining explanations and investigate missing settlements. Approvers finish independent decisions, while operational batch posting completes accounting requests. A fresh assessment reflects that work rather than relying on an old checklist that someone manually marks complete.

Warnings deserve review even when they do not stop close. Money still on its expected journey can remain outstanding without being missing. Conversely, accepting a missing-money concern does not remove that money from processor clearing. The assessment gives staff enough context to see both the policy decision and the financial position.

## Its Facets

**Blocking concerns** identify unfinished work that prevents period completion. **Advisory concerns** provide timing and review information. Their distinction is essential to understanding which action the controller needs to take next.

**Problem findings** organize the principal record with supporting relationships. **Clearing explanation** compares outstanding effects with posted money rather than relying on deposit balance alone.

**Payment positions** summarize how period items have progressed. **Accepted concerns** retain the policy decisions anchored to the period, including independent approvers when applicable. **Period and evaluation day** distinguish a preview’s state from a period-end assessment.

## How It Relates

Readiness reads payouts, settlement items, reconciliations, exceptions and accounting requests without owning their correction workflows. The close owner consumes the result after acquiring the period lock. Accounting configuration and operational posting influence clearing balance, so a discrepancy may require work outside the reconciliation screens.

## What It Could Become

The product should provide a complete late-entry review path and decide whether acknowledged look-alike deposits require a continuing close warning. Those checks exist in the assessment vocabulary without complete producer workflows. Processor imports can later support the unavailable matching position. Design should preserve the difference between reviewing a financial concern and changing the actual close state.
