Preserve a placed sale's governing policy and resolution context for later processing, allowing the existing
  live-policy fallback for migrated records.

alternatives:
  - option: Use current policy for every processing step
why_not: Configuration edits would change the processing terms of an existing sale.
  - option: Create multiple sales from a mixed-policy cart
why_not: Multiple-order placement needs a separate product and implementation decision.
consequences:
  - New sales retain their payment and charge-product policy snapshot.
  - 'Conflicting item policies stop placement, while authorized staff can explicitly select a policy.'

# An order freezes its checkout policy at placement

## Context

Administrators can change checkout configuration after a purchase was placed.

## Decision

Capture the governing policy at placement and use the recorded processing rules for that sale. Migrated records retain the implemented live-policy fallback.

## Alternatives Considered

Using current policy for every step changes existing agreements. Splitting mixed carts into several sales is a separate unimplemented scope decision.

## Consequences

New policy edits govern future placements. Reports retain how the chosen policy was resolved, and migrated-order handling requires its own caveat.
