# Opening

## What It Is

An opening is a place on a committee that the association advertises: the treasurer’s seat falling vacant at year end, two director places on the board, any seat on a task force. It names its committee and, optionally, the seat or the position it is for, how many places it offers, the days it takes applications and what it says to candidates. Staff create it by hand or draft it from the vacancy forecast. It starts as a draft seen only by staff; publishing it advertises it outside the console as the committee’s directory listing allows, on the public website, to signed-in members, or to nobody. It closes when staff close it, when enough seat-holders start on what it offers, or when it is cancelled. An opening is identified by its committee and what it is for, and a seat that opens again later gets a new opening.

## What It Is Not

An opening is not a vacant seat. A seat is part of the committee’s structure, owned by the Committees module, and can be vacant without anyone recruiting for it; an opening is the act of recruiting, which may also be planned before the seat falls vacant. An opening is not a Volunteers opportunity, though the architecture intends Volunteers to turn openings into opportunities. And it is not a nomination or an application: those are candidates put forward for the opening.

## How It Is Used

Each autumn a governance manager reads the vacancy forecast to see who leaves in the coming year, who has served their term limit and who already has a successor, and drafts openings for those seats in one step. They publish them, and the committee’s chair and staff liaison are told. Members see the openings in the portal or on the website and say they are interested; staff read the interest with each note. Nominations and applications follow. When the new member’s appointment starts, the opening fills and leaves the website. Dissolving a committee cancels its openings. Good use advertises every coming vacancy in time to fill it. What goes wrong: an opening ignores its own window, staying open past its deadline and filling before it opens; two people leaving one position on a committee without seats produce two openings.

## Its Facets

The target and places say what is recruited for and when the opening is full. The application window says when it takes applications. The directory listing decides who sees it. Interest records members who raised their hand. The vacancy forecast finds seats about to fall vacant. The fill counts appointments that start on what it offers. Alternates are reserves recorded from Submissions decisions.

## How It Relates

An opening belongs to a committee and may name one of its seats and positions, all owned by the Committees module, whose appointments fill it. Nominations may name it. Seat applications decided in Submissions belong to it, producing pending appointments or alternates. Volunteers and Submissions are only referenced so far.

## What It Could Become

The openings milestone carries no product decisions yet; six design questions about recruitment were escalated. Open edges: whether an opening closes automatically at its deadline and refuses to fill outside its window, recruiting through Volunteers, committee-scoped authority so a chair manages only their own committee’s openings, and the staff screens for openings that do not exist yet.
