Price
What It Is
A price answers what this buyer pays for this item in this selling situation. Staff can begin with a familiar Standard amount, but the payable result depends on more than a single label beside a product. The buyer’s audiences, applicable period, quantity and configured adjustments contribute to the calculation, and the explanation preserves how the result was reached.
Accounting holds the product’s price rows. Commerce holds audience and purchasing configuration and applies the pricing calculation. The product’s grid lets staff see these inputs together: an audience can have different amounts across periods and currencies, while an Always row provides continuing coverage when a dated cell is absent.
A quote is one way to request the calculated result before buying. The storefront, staff preview and recommendations can also ask for prices in their respective contexts. These requests help people understand likely payment without creating an order. Placement performs its own calculation and qualification checks, so staff must distinguish a useful preview from a commitment to an earlier amount.
What It Is Not
Price is distinct from a payment, invoice balance or marketing discount. A price schedule organizes dates rather than owning the event that may eventually supply them. Audience qualification concerns pricing eligibility, while permission concerns who may inspect or change configuration. Publicly displaying Member pricing does not qualify every visitor for it.
How It Is Used
Administrators define audiences and product purchasing choices, edit the grid and inspect Preview As. Staff can explore an assumed audience or date when explaining a potential sale. Buyers use the results appropriate to their own identity. Calculation can refuse a prohibited currency, a missing conversion or a product unavailable for public purchase. Extension warnings explain calculations that continue without optional customer logic.
Its Facets
Audiences. Named qualifying groups have ranks used during price selection.
Periods. Schedules coordinate dated pricing boundaries and preserve used periods.
Purchasing choices. Product settings choose selection strategy, priced subject and qualification timing.
Customer functions. Registered handlers contribute product-specific adjustments.
Public display. Audience display selections make additional prices visible without granting eligibility.
Quotes. Read-only calculation requests support preview, browsing, composing orders and offers.
How It Relates
The checkout policy supplies financial context and Accounting supplies base products, price rows and conversion data. Eligibility supplies qualification decisions. Promotions compare permitted discounted outcomes against pricing, while orders retain the selected result when a sale proceeds. Stores contribute their own pricing extension context.
What It Could Become
The product should settle the transition to owner-managed schedules and complete live membership qualification. It should preserve the distinction between displayed estimates and bound order prices when designing previews, particularly for recommendations whose expiry currently limits response rather than freezing a price.
