Nomination
What It Is
A nomination is a candidate put forward for a committee: a member nominating a colleague for the board, a nominating committee proposing a slate of officers, a member putting themselves forward. It names the committee and, optionally, the opening, seat or position it is for, and the nominee, who is a contact or, before they become one, a name and an e-mail address. A member who nominates someone else is recorded as the nominator and the nominee is asked to consent. A nomination is reviewed, by staff or in Submissions, and then slated, declined or withdrawn. Slating can put the nominee to the committee’s own vote through a decision of kind appointment; when that carries, the nomination is elected and linked to the appointment it produced. A nomination is identified by its committee, its nominee and when it was made.
What It Is Not
A nomination is not an appointment. The appointment is the roster record of someone serving, owned by the Committees module; a nomination is how a candidate was put forward, and an elected nomination simply links to the appointment it produced. It is not a seat application either: an application is the candidate applying to an opening, reviewed in Submissions, which may produce a pending appointment directly without any nomination.
How It Is Used
Staff record nominations as they arrive, or members nominate in the portal. Before the election, staff slate the chosen nominees; on a board whose rules require it, slating opens the appointment decision, linked to the nomination so that a voter whose disclosure names the nominee is suggested for recusal. The board carries the decision at its meeting and the nominee is elected and seated, filling the opening. A nominee who withdraws is withdrawn, which also withdraws their pending decision; a nominee who is declined is never appointed, even by a decision already open. Good use traces every elected member to how they were chosen. What goes wrong: a nominee who exists only as a name cannot be slated into a decision, a nominee merged in CRM stays on the merged-away contact, and the custom fields Product decided nominations should carry are not built.
Its Facets
The nominee is the candidate. The target is the opening, seat or position. The nominator and consent record who put the candidate forward and whether they agreed. The review may run in Submissions. The slate selects the candidate for the committee’s vote. The election links the appointment produced. The nomination form fields are the association’s own questions, still to be built. Nominations waiting for review are an attention line for staff, kept off Home until the portal phase.
How It Relates
A nomination belongs to a committee, owned by the Committees module, whose own setting decides whether it takes nominations at all. It may name an opening. Its slate is a decision of the committee, and the appointment it produces is the Committees module’s. Its nominee is a contact in CRM. Submissions may slate or decline it.
What It Could Become
The nominations milestone carries no product decisions yet. Open edges: the nomination form’s custom fields, consent as a step the nominee completes in the portal, merged nominees following the surviving contact, slating name-only nominees by creating their contact, and the console screens for nominations that do not exist yet.
